CHANGES IN THE TIER 4 GSVisa

I am writing to let you know that the UK Government is proposing that the minimum level of English required in order to obtain a Tier 4 General Student Visa should be raised from the current B1 (Intermediate) to B2 (Upper Intermediate), which is a higher level of English. In addition, it is proposing that only Highly Trusted Sponsors (HTS) on the UKBA Register of Sponsors be allowed to issue Tier 4 General Student Visas. At this time, these proposals have not yet been implemented, but it is our understanding that these changes will be announced in February / March 2011, for implementation in April 2011.

At the same time, as you are aware, the UK Government has introduced the Extended Student Visitor Visa (ESVV), which is for English language students who want to follow an English language course of up to 11 months duration. All ESVV students must apply from their home country before travelling to the UK. There is no minimum English language requirement for the ESVV, so beginner and elementary level students are able to apply for this visa.

In addition, there are no changes to the existing Student Visitor Visa (SVV) route, which is valid for students on courses of up to 6 months. As with the ESVV, there is no minimum language level requirement for the SVV. SVV students from non-visa national countries (e.g. Brazil, Korea, Japan) may apply for SVVs upon arrival in the UK, whilst students from visa national countries (e.g. Colombia, Turkey, Thailand, Venezuela) must apply from their home country before travelling to the UK.

Therefore, what we expect to happen is as follows:

1. Current rules - up to April 2011

  • Tier 4 GSV minimum level B1 requirement. All sponsors able to accept Tier 4 GSV students.
  • ESVVs for English language courses up to 11 months. No minimum language level requirement. All accredited schools able to accept ESVV students.
  • SVVs for English language courses up to 6 months. No minimum language level requirement. All accredited schools able to accept SVV students.

2. After April 2011

  • Tier 4 GSV minimum level B2 requirement. HTS sponsors able to accept Tier 4 GSV students.
  • ESVVs for English language courses up to 11 months. No minimum language level requirement. All accredited schools able to accept ESVV students.
  • SVVs for English language courses up to 6 months. No minimum language level requirement. All accredited schools able to accept SVV students.

Therefore, if you are thinking of applying to come to the UK as a student it would be wise to apply before the changes come into effect. Please do not hesitate to contact us for a speedy application process to ensure that you get through just in time.
